FUNletter: I want you to make ugly art
Funletter? Yes, because I'm packing it with things I find fun, and hope you will too. As an autistic, what I find fun is drastically different. AND THAT'S OK. I'm here to reclaim fun.
1. I want you to make ugly art!!!
I really do. It’s so much fun… and sometimes it turns out way prettier than you imagine. I looooveeee applying watercolor to a notebook page, adding lots of water and then smooshing the pages together to see what happens. I then write over the dried watercolor when I journal each day. It’s soooo fun, and I really hope you try it!
Here’s an essay of encouragement I wrote in case you need a push: I Want You to Make Ugly Art
2. I’m adding more and more plants to my expressive arts therapy studio.
I’m also hanging up empty frames. I fill them up as I make art.
3. I published an autism essay:
4. I want your input for my next series of AuDHD interviews.
In 2022 and 2023, I released a series of Late-Identified Autism Interviews and Combined Autism and ADHD Interviews. I’d like to do another series of interviews, which I’m thinking of calling Learning to Work with Your AuDHD Brain. I’d love to hear what questions you would like to see included in my interviews.
5. I’m having fun making word art.
The one below I chose to cut up, frame, and hang on my studio wall. I’ll write and share an essay that will explain the sentiments behind my art in the future.
6. I did a mini art retreat!
My friend and I decided to spend the weekend together for a mini art retreat. We dedicated our time together to taking stock of where we are in our professional and personal lives, and where we want to go. We came up with an experiment I enjoyed. We set a timer for five minutes, and then had to give a spontaneous “State of the Union” address - which was basically us playfully pontificating on how we’re doing and what we want for the future.
